Ingredients

Mederma Cold Sore patch is made of a backing ‐ made from a Polyurethane film 15μm of thickness resting on a paper and protected by a polyethylene film ‐ coated with hydrocolloid adhesive. A protective silicone paper is inserted between the primary packaging printed paper (= wrapper) and the polyurethane film side of the adhesive disc. The patch is packaged between two wrappers which compose the device primary packaging

Directions

Be sure to wash your hands before and after the application. There should not be any cream on the lip as the patch may not stick. Tear off one product along the perforated edge to seperate it from the others.Hold the clear paper applicator at the curved edge. Using both hands, carefully peel off the clear paper applicator from the protective cover. You will see the round cold sore patch on the upper part of the applicator. Do not touch the adhesive side of the patch. Apply this part of the applicator to the cold sore and using a mirror, gently press down to firmly place the patch on to the cold sore. Gently peel back the applicator, leaving the patch in place. Make-up or lipstick can be applied over the patch

22 years of breakouts, finally found what works!
I normally don’t write product reviews, but as someone who’s suffered from cold sores since I was about 7 years old, I had to let everyone else out there plagued with this virus know how great these patches are. Let me start off by saying, i did not put these on Day 1, so I don’t know how they work on a fresh blister, but I imagine it’s not as great as a flat/crusty one.To start, I haven’t had a cold sore in YEARS, I can’t even remember the last time - it’s been *that* long. But I was on vacation this past week and after a day of traveling - bam. Woke up with a huge one on my upper lip. I’m talking, lip swollen, painful glands, the works. No warning tingle/ itch/ burn. Nothing I could do to prevent it. I wasn’t expecting a cold sore bc, like I said, it had been years since I had one, but I always travel with tea tree oil, alcohol wipes, and SkinSmart wound healer - for first aid purposes. First, I lanced the blisters with a needle, and then applied light pressure with an alcohol wipe, followed by wound healer, and then tea tree. Repeat every 30 mins-1 hour. Ice in between, for the swelling. This dried up the sore completely in 24 hours. It was flat, and virtually invisible aside from the swelling.Until day 3 when the scab started forming, and 4 more small blisters popped up under my nose. I guess the virus was making up for lost time? Rude. By this time I was home, and I repeated the same steps above on the new blisters (pictured), but added boric acid powder on top of the tea tree (it’s commonly sold for yeast infections in a suppository capsule - I used the powder in it), because of its antiviral properties, it dries them out s u p e r fast - quick disclaimer, if you try boric acid please DO NOT get it IN your mouth. It is poisonous if ingested!Anyways, I had ordered these patches the first day and was eager to try them out during the ugly scab phase. I was not disappointed. Not only do they disguise the scab, they protect it from cracking, from being accidentally touched, spreading the virus to your pillowcase, etc. But they actually speed the healing way up! Cold sores used to take me 2 weeks to heal, even small ones. Big ones, sometimes longer. When I learned how to dry them out fast, the blister stage only lasted 24 hours but the scabbing would still take its time. About 5-8 days after the blister. Not ideal. So imagine how stoked I was, when I had this patch on a big ugly crusty yellow scab for just 9 hours, took it off before bed to change it for a new one and all that was under it was a little fleshy pink spot. What!! Amazing. It didn’t hurt to take off either, like some people said. Maybe if you’re having trouble try hot compressing it with warm water first? I didn’t, but mine came off without fuss. So, long story long, these are great for after the blister stage. I put a new one on before bed and I’m sure it’ll be half the size tomorrow. I’m also going to put one on the new blisters tomorrow as soon as I wake up (when they’re fully dried out from this last boric acid pack).Because of the nature of these sores, I wouldn’t recommend putting them on a full new blister. I know there’s debate, but after dealing with these for 22 years, I’ve found that lancing them with a sterile needle is the way to go. Just be careful not to get the fluid anywhere else. Mop it up and alcohol it! Then once they’re dried out, use these patches! You won’t regret it.Also, I’m allergic to most adhesive/bandages so I was worried these would just make my skin more agitated but they didn’t AT ALL.Seriously, everyone. Buy them. Even if you don’t have a cold sore right now. Buy a pack so you’re prepared when one pops up. And take care of yourself! I only get cold sores when I’m really slacking on my physical and mental health. Seriously. Eat right, hydrate, take your supplements, exercise, minimize stress, communicate, meditate - whatever you need to do to take care of YOU. Prioritize it. Bc, if you’re here reading this, you know how bad these breakouts suck. You don’t have to suffer with them. Alright, I’m out. Hope this helps someone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Little miracles!
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2023
Anyone that gets cold sores/fever blisters, this is a MUST HAVE! I've used a cream in the past but I haven't had 1 in so long I didn't have anything on hand this time so I tried these and wow! I had gotten the first tingle & itch and by the next day a small red bump was starting right on the edge of my lip. These came within 24hrs and I applied the 1st one as soon as I got them. They are tricky, as I almost threw away the piece w/ the actual patch on it. There is a clear plastic tab and a teak plastic protective cover. The patch is on the clear tab, NOT THE TEAL PLASTIC COVER! Peel the clear tab, being careful not to touch anything but the rounded edge to pull. Throw away the teal plastic cover. The clear patch is on the clear tab and it is super difficult to see.
Make sure ur skin is dry, no oils or creams or anything. Stretch ur skin so it's taut and place the patch on it. Press it down so all the edges are sealed, holding it down for several seconds to make sure. Sometimes it took a little longer than others so I would carefully peel back the side of the clear applicator tab to see if the patch was adhered before pulling the whole tab away. Once it is fully adhered, carefully pull the clear plastic applicator tab away. Smooth down the patch while keeping ur skin nice and taut.
It was completely invisible! I couldn't believe my eyes! Not only could I not see the patch, but it concealed the growing bump somewhat and I could see how easily u can apply make-up over it if needed.
Instantly, I had no symptoms! No tingling, no itching, gone like magic!!!! What is this sorcery????
It lasted ALL DAY even under a hot sweaty silicone face mask, through talking, eating and drinking, no problems! It says up to 12hrs relief, so I made the mistake of thinking I NEEDED to take it off after 12hrs... but u don't! U should leave it on as long as it stays on & as long as it's providing relief. So after 12hrs when I pulled it off, I found I had to pull all the edges up carefully and pull the opposite edges AWAY from each other, NOT pulling the patch away from the skin. Pulling the sides away from each other caused it to come loose naturally without pulling the skin and came up without hurting or breaking the skin. If u pull it up and away from the skin, u could break the skin and defeat the purpose, further delaying healing.
Really u should leave it until it is falling off on its own. It says in the directions to leave on a long as it stays on. I was able to get more than 24hrs adhesion and relief with ONE PATCH! if u leave it until its ready to fall off on its own, it comes off, super easily, without pulling, and I found it helped healing much more. I simply kept each patch on until it was ready to be removed (u will notice the edges start to come up and when u pull a little u will feel theres very little adhesion left). I would just clean the area w/ some witch Hazel (or use another cleaning drying agent), and put another patch on.
Normally w/ a cream, it would take at least 5-7 days to scab and then another 5-7 days for the scab to heal. If I was really lucky to catch it at very first tingle, maybe I could shorten it by a couple of days. It may not have gotten as big and awful but it still went thru the same process basically. But with the patch, it NEVER turned into anything! It stayed the small red bump and then disappeared over 4-5 days. It never got any bigger, it never turned into a scab, nothing!!!! I probably could have stopped treatment end of day 4 when the patch came off naturally, but there was still a little red mark, not raised, but just a little red, and i didnt want to take any chances being this is my 1st time using them. I put another fresh patch and end of day 5, the patch came off and there was nothing! I'm in complete shock.
These are incredible! I can't believe how well they work and how well they conceal! I had to look so hard in the mirror to see the patch...it really is unbelievable. The key is to really follow the directions. Like I said, dont remove them before they are ready to fall off! Make sure the skin is super dry and they are applied well. They are worth every penny!!!! I highly recommend!
